Elderberries are a kind of super-food cousin that have been shown to fight cold and flu symptoms. They may also have other health benefits such as supporting heart health and fighting inflammation.

This homemade elderberry syrup recipe is pretty quick and easy to make and will keep your entire family healthy all year long! (Side note it does make your house smell a little odd when making this – just be warned).

  • 2 Cups Dried Elderberries
  • 4 Cups Water
  • 1 Tbsp Dried Hibiscus Flower
  • 1 Star Anise
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1 Cardamom Pod
  • Peel of 1 Orange
  • Honey

In a sauce pan, heat elderberries, water, hibiscus, star anise, cinnamon, cardamom and orange peel. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 40 minutes. Stir occasionally, and smash open the elderberries.

When the mixture has cooled, strain the liquid out through a mesh bag or cheese cloth. (I use these nut milk bags, which are also great for making juices without a juicer)

Measure out the liquid and add equal parts honey. Heat gently, just to combine the honey and elderberry liquid.

Store in a glass bottle in the fridge for up to 3 months. Take a spoonful per day to keep your immune system strong, or a few spoonfuls a day if you’re fighting off a cold.
